Understand the 70 Weeks of Daniel 9

The 70 Weeks of Daniel 9:24-27 are still in fulfillment

Introduction:

This prophecy was penned over 2500 years ago and is still in the fulfillment stage.

It is by far the most important end time prophecy in all of scripture bar none.

We may well be the generation that sees the awesome dramas that will come at the consummation of the age. The 70 Weeks prophecy helps us to connect the dots and give us a timeline for those critical events. Because when that covenant, (of Dan. 9:27), is signed which I believe to be imminent, everything will change overnight. When that epic day arrives God will be resuming His determined dealings with
1. His Chosen people, and
2. His Holy City Jerusalem.

The Prophecy:

Let us begin by looking at the scripture passage from Daniel chapter 9:

Verses 24-27 KJV

24 “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.”

This was a prophecy that was for the nation of Israel and will also affect the whole world.

It covers the period of time from Daniel’s day to the second coming of Christ in the future. It is in three stages and timeframes

with certain events mentioned that will trigger the start of each.

Explanation of the prophecy:

This prophecy was for a period of 490 years, yet over 2500 years have elapsed and it is not completely fulfilled. Was Daniel wrong or do we just need further understanding of it’s meaning? In the next few paragraphs you will learn that Daniel was right although he himself did not understand what he had seen and written. First let me explain how I got from 70 weeks to 490 years

70 weeks =490 days right! According to (Num. 14:33-34) God cursed Israel’s punishment and multiplied all the days of their punishment into years. We can see it again in (Ezek. 4:3-6). The first period was 49 years (7weeksx7days. vs. 25a. It was to begin from the command to restore and rebuild the walls and the city, Jerusalem;(Not the Temple but the city. The Temple of Zerubbabel was rebuilt during this time but a separate command by King Cyrus was given for this at a different time later) The command to restore Jerusalem is recorded in Neh. 2:1-18. This converts to March 5, 444 BC . It is commonly known and accepted that this restoration project took 49 years. The second period of time is in vs.25b and it was 62x7which =434 years. This is how long it took to clean up all the rubbish of the city and make it habitable again with streets and trenches and a Refurbished Temple after the destruction of 150 years earlier by the Babylonians and to allow time to prepare the city and the people for the Triumphal entry of Jesus on Palm SundayAD33.

3 This was a total of 483 years. It is important to note that the prophetic time calculations are in Jewish time. All their months were 30 days and = a 360 day year. From March 5, 444 BC to the day that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday was 173,880 days. This can be proven from the following calculations and scriptures; Divide 173,880 by 360 and you will get 483 This can be further verified by the following scriptures: Rev.11:2& 12:6. If you multiply 42X30 you will get1260, divide 1260by 360 you will get 3.5. If you use the 365 day Gregorian Calendar for calculations it throws everything 7 years off.

Messiah was cut off the following weekend and the city and the Temple was destroyed again shortly after that. This time by the Romans in 70 AD, 36.5 years after the crucifixion.

All of this takes us up to the end of the 69th week of the 70 week prophecy. There is still one week, 7 years left to go and that is a detailed study all by itself with lots of disagreement among Theologians. The first two sections of the 490 years happened back to back with no break in time between them. There is a break of un-specified length in time before the third section of 1 week 7 years starts to happen. It’s signal is stated in vs.27. ) the He is the Antichrist.) Daniel 9:27 is the most significant prophecy yet to unfold. It is the next big event to pop up on the calendar. “This extraordinary future peace agreement must be signed and ratified. When that happens the trumpets will be blowing, some in celebration, and some in warning. Some students of Bible prophecy believe that there is some good evidence that the peace covenant of Dan.9:27 will occur right on some future Jewish new year. And thus the Feast of Trumpets will come into its New Covenant fulfillment. It seems that the Day of Atonement that is seven years later, marks out with total precision the 2550 days that will encompass Daniel's 70th Week. It is an exact fit. Is this just a coincidence? I don’t think so. See Dan. 12:11-12 for the extra 30 days: THESE EXTRA 30 DAYS GO OUT BEYOND THE 1260 DAYS OF THE LATTER HALF OF THE 70TH WEEK. THEY APPEAR TO BE A 30 DAY "GRACE PERIOD".

IT IS THE LAST 30 DAYS FOR INDIVIDUALS AND NATIONS TO DEAL WITH GOD. THE VERY NEXT DAY AFTER THIS IS JUDGEMENT DAY.” (Jameson, Fausset and Brown Commentary of The Bible)

Here are the events:

  1. finish transgression; 2) make an end of sin;

3) make atonement for iniquity; 4) to bring in everlasting righteousness; 5) to seal up vision and prophecy;
